“I know you don’t believe me, Mr. Patterson, and I know you think I’m crazy, but I’m telling you — something was shouting at me!”

“Jake…”

“I’m telling you, guys. I heard something, something not inside my head!”

“Jake! We’ve got a serious problem on our hands. You’ve interrupted class again for the fourth time this week, yelling profanities over God-knows-what while Mrs. Dunkmann was lecturing. She’s had it up to her eyeballs and won’t take your disturbances lightly anymore.” Principal Patterson shouted, shaking his finger in Jake’s face while Mrs. Dunkmann stood with arms folded.

“I hate to do this, but you’ll have to spend two weeks in detention. I hope you’ll be able to learn from this and get back on track, because as you know, graduation is approaching soon. Now, please head to detention immediately!”

Jake grabbed his books and headed down the hall, just as he was told, where students at Orchard Park High called the hole. He didn’t argue. He didn’t make a fuss. He walked, with shoulders and head bent over, confused at what just happened.

It wasn’t the first time Jake visited the principal’s office or spent time in the hole, and it certainly wasn’t the first time he got yelled at for disturbing a class. But it was the first time Principal Patterson looked bothered while yelling…
